NRA Action Pistol

NRA Action Match

NRA Action Pistol (Bianchi Cup) is shot in four courses of fire including the Falling Plates, the Mover, the Practical and the Barricade events. Each course of fire in the Action Pistol Match is 48 rounds x 10 points each, totalling a match score of 480 points. It Should be noted that at Silverdale Pistol club we do not shoot the mover as we do not have the facilities to shot this sequence, this match has been replaced with the speed load challenge event.  NRA Action Pistol has over 17 different matches, see the rule book for details and if you want to try any of them left the range master know in advance. In Australia the SSAA is the governing Body for Action Pistol.

Two types of targets are used in Australia i.e. 8 inch steel falling plates and the NRA target, which is a cardboard rectangle with a rounded top.  The target has a printed inner X 10 ring used for tie breaks, an outer 10 ring and an 8 ring.  The remainder of the target scores 5 points. Action Pistol is available to all pistol shooters who hold a PA holster proficiency card.

Pistols

The match is suited for either revolver or self loading pistols but there are restrictions on specifications regarding length of barrel, trigger pull weight, no optical sights, sighting radius, no compensators etc.

The competitor does not need a lot of specialised, high price equipment to compete.  The important thing is that the pistol is reliable and safe.  A safe holster is paramount and competitors using semi-automatic pistols will need extra magazines.  In the Open class event the competitor can use red dot scopes, extended bases for going prone, wings for the barricade and adjustable mounts for the mover.  However, with the introduction of Standard class, competitors can shoot with an out of the box semi-automatic pistol or revolver.

Power factor

There are some specific rules for the type of ammunition used in Action Pistol competition.  The lower limit of calibre shall be 9mm.  Samples of ammunition will be collected in a tournament and tested over a chronograph to meet or exceed the power factor.  Power factor is calculated at bullet weight x muzzle velocity = not less than 120,000.

Division's

Open Division. In the Open Division you are allowed the use of an electronic sight on your pistol, also found in the open division are “wings” for bracing against the barricade during events that include shooting from cover. A minimum trigger weight of 2 lbs. You may also use an “Open” holster i.e. a holster which does not surround the entire pistol, but instead allows for a faster, forward draw, versus the traditional up and out draw of a standard top draw holster.

Metallic Division; in the Metallic Division you are NOT allowed to have electronic sights of any kind, hence the name “Metallic” insinuating the use of metallic iron sights only. In the metallic division you are allowed the use of adjustable sights on the front and rear of your firearm. You are NOT allowed the use of “wings” but you do have the same 2 lbs minimum trigger weight and are allowed the use of an open face holster.

Production Division, in the Production Division; you are not allowed any of the modifications of the Open or Metallic Divisions. The intent of the production division is for you to use an “out of the box” pistol, such as but not limited to, a GLOCK, FNH, Smith & Wesson or CZ-USA semi auto and or revolver; Colt is very popular in the Metallic and Open Divisions in the 1911 Platform. You must use a standard top draw holster. (Blade-Tech Industries, Safariland Inc. and Comp Tac are three of the popular holster and magazine/ carrier companies on the market) and there is a 3.5 lbs trigger weight minimum in any mode for semi auto and in double action only mode for revolver. For a full description of rules for all three Divisions, please refer to the NRA Action Pistol Rule Book link, provided above. This is strongly encouraged; you will want to make sure you know what division your pistol will fall into. Learningthespecificrulesforyourdivisionpriortocompetingisstrongly advised.

Course of Fire 48 Rounds pre stage (192)

The Falling Plate event is a series of six 8 inch plates, each worth 10 points and one X. The plates are shot at 10, 15, 20 & 25 yards with the time allowed to shoot all plates varying from 6 to 9 seconds. Competitors may stand, kneel or go prone to shoot the plates, but the starting position is always to stand with hands shoulder high. The plates are a hit or miss match. The saying is "there are no 8's on plates" as they can make or break your match. Due to range limitations this match is shot on 8inch black paper practices targets.
